Many companies use pallets in their manufacturing and distribution systems today. Pallets when empty need to be stacked and delivered back into the manufacturing area or returned to the supplier that owns them. When stacking pallets the un-wanted pallet is placed in the open area below the other pallets. This will automatically signal the unit that a pallet is present and stack it.

When dispensing pallets a stack of up to 18 Pallets will be placed into the dispenser. The dispenser will automatically dispense pallets every 25 seconds. When a pallet has been removed, the unit will automatically dispense, lowering a replacement pallet for easy removal by a pallet jack.

How can you stack or dispense a pallet that will not cause musculoskeletal stresses, such as heavy lifting, bending, reaching, twisting, etc.?

Employees must reach above shoulder height to access the top of a stack of pallets and bend to lower them to floor. Pallets weigh between 40 and 70 pounds and may be lifted several times during a work shift. This repeated lifting can cause stress to the lower back and the shoulders. Additionally, lifts above shoulder height often require awkward hand and wrist movements. There is greater diversity in today's workforce. Once dominated by men, the industrial workers of today are more diverse in gender and age.

THE SOLUTION:
The answer to the problem is a Pallet Dispenser / Stacker. As the pallets are emptied, they are carried by pallet jack to the dispenser / stacker. When stacking, the pallet is placed in the open area below the other stacked pallets, the dispenser will stack it automatically. When the dispenser is full (It will hold a maximum of eighteen pallets or 2500 lbs) the stack is removed also via pallet truck or forklift and placed for reuse. Conversely, a stack of empty pallets can be placed in the dispenser / stacker and each individual pallet can be removed, once again from the bottom by pallet jack. There is no more lifting, reaching, bending and stretching required.

WARNING ON POTENTIAL HAZARDS OF HANDLING PALLETS 
Wooden Pallets weigh between 40 and 70 pounds and may be lifted several times during a work shift. This repeated lifting can cause stress to the lower back. Manually lifting loads in this weight range places great stress on the employee's muscles. Back injuries, such as muscle strain and disc injury, can occur when repeatedly lifting heavy objects. This also adds stress to the employees' shoulders and arms. Employees when handling pallets should be able to lift these items without bending at the waist, or pulling the elbows away from body while reaching, or twisting. Splinters from handling the wood pallets are also a hazard to the worker.
CASE STUDY: ORDER PICKING 
Many distributors use the Traditional Order Pick System today. In this system, pallets of product are taken from the dock, where they have arrived from the producer, and are placed in racking slots. An empty destination pallet is removed from a stack. The selector moves the pallet from slot to slot using some sort of lift and transport device. Generally, this device is a pallet jack. The selector removes a specified amount of product from the each slot so they can build loads of goods as per customer specification. After a palletized load is fully assembled, it is wrapped with a plastic material and loaded into a truck for delivery to the customer's facility.

A pallet dispenser eliminates the manual lifting and handling of pallets. This device allows Selectors to drive their pallet jack to the dispenser. An empty pallet is then automatically dispensed, placing it at floor level, for removal by a hand pallet truck. The selector then proceeds to the pick slots to build loads of goods for shipping. Empty pallets in the pick slots can be brought back to the dispenser and accumulated for reuse. The dispenser can accumulate or dispense 18 pallets at a rate of 3 pallets per minute.
